Missouri’s flag was designed by Marie Elizabeth Watkins Oliver in 1908 when she became the chairperson of a Daughter’s of the American Revolution committee to create a state flag. During the Civil War, the Missouri state militia carried a flag bearing the Missouri coat of arms which became central to Oliver’s design. Her design then materialized into a painted paper flag and proposed to the House, who turned it down. Unfortunately, a fire in the Missouri State Capitol destroyed that flag in 1911. So, Oliver sewed a new silk one which was adopted as the official state flag on March 22, 1913. The original flag can be seen today at the Secretary of State’s office in Jefferson City, Missouri.

When the French explorers arrived the area was inhabited by Native Americans of the Osage and the Missouri groups, and by the end of the 17th cent. French trade with the Native Americans flourished. The U.S. Territory of Missouri was set up in 1812, but the settlement was slow even after the War of 1812.

Mrs. Oliver became the Missouri State Regent in 1910. The Oliver flag was adopted by the Missouri Legislature and on March 22, 1913, Governor Elliot Major signed the bill into law.

These stars bring into light that Missouri was the 24th state to become a member of the Union. There is another cluster of 24 stars within the shield, that hint at the same connotation. The central state coat of arms is held by 2 grizzly bears.

The coat of arms centered on the flag denotes many treasured meanings. First, the two grizzly bears are symbols of courage and strength. The grizzly bear within the center on the left represents the strength and bravery of the citizens of the state while the above crescent moon symbolizes a new state.

In 1988, to celebrate the Missouri State Flag's 75th birthday, the Missouri elementary school children helped to raise funds to have the flag restored. It is now on display in the Missouri State Archives in Jefferson City in the James C. Kirkpatrick State Information Center. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Missouri flag for the future.
