Colorado, which joined the union as the 38th state in 1876, is America's eighth largest state in terms of land mass. Located in the Rocky Mountain region of the western United States, the state's abundant and varied natural resources attracted the ancient Pueblo peoples and, later, the Plains Indians.

First explored by Europeans in the late 1500s (the Spanish referred to the region as "Colorado" for its red-colored earth), the area was ceded to the United States in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1858, the discovery of gold in Colorado attracted new settlers. During the Plains Indian Wars (1860s-80s), Colorado's wild frontier was the scene of intense fighting between Native Americans and white settlers. In the 21st century, Colorado continues to rely on its natural resources as well as agriculture and tourism to sustain its economy.

While Colorado was seeking to establish a government and engaged in conflict with Native Americans, the state's mining boom was in sharp decline. The surface gold had been extracted in the middle 1860s, and mining areas became, and in many cases remain, studded with ghost townsâ€"machinery abandoned and shacks deserted. Other towns, such as Central City with its famous opera house dating from the city's days of opulence, managed to stay alive.

The Colorado State Flag was designed by Andrew Carlisle Johnson and adopted by the Colorado General Assembly on June 5, 1911. The flag specifications seemed clear enough when adopted but modification to the legislation was required in 1929 and in 1964.

The red, white, and blue of the U.S. Banner show up in the Colorado banner, as do the blue, yellow, and white of the columbine. The area's broad stores of gold and silver, which conveyed numerous early pioneers to the region which still are effectively mined, are reflected in the yellow and white of the banner.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Colorado flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Colorado flag for the future.

Delaware's history is a long and proud one. Early explorations of our coastline were made by the Spaniards and Portuguese in the sixteenth century, by Henry Hudson in 1609 under the auspices of the Dutch, by Samuel Argall in 1610, by Cornelius May in 1613, and by Cornelius Hendricksen in 1614.

August 28, 1609-The Spanish and Portuguese are believed to have made explorations of the Delaware coastline in the early sixteenth century (as early as 1526!). However, Henry Hudson-an English navigator under the employ of the Dutch East India Trading Company is credited with the discovery of what would become known as the Delaware River and the Delaware Bay.

The state of Delaware is honored with a typical Delaware Flag. The Flag was received formally on fourth July 1913. By Delaware Flag Law, the Delaware Flag is a field of provincial blue with a buff hued precious diamond pattern in the middle. The emblem of the Delaware state is put just on this precious diamond.

Because of this ratification, Delaware became the first state in the Union, and is, therefore, accorded the first position in such national events as presidential inaugurations. According to members of the original commission established to design the flag, the shades of buff and colonial blue represent those of the uniform of General George Washington, the first President of the United States, and adapted from an official U.S. Army publication.

As portrayed by the first commission individuals who outlined the banner, the tones of blue and buff are representations of the ones present in General George Washington's uniform. On the shield of the Delaware Flag, the boat reflects the state's rich trade, the bull, corn, wheat and agriculturists reflect cultivating and cows farming. The trooper on the Delaware Flag pays respect to the Revolutionary War Soldiers.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Delaware flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. Connecticut derives its name from its principal river, called by the Indians Quonehtacut, and which, in their language, signified 'the long river.’ While Connecticut was first explored by the Dutch, who founded trading posts, the first permanent settlements were made by English Puritans from Massachusetts, starting in 1633. From the first, Connecticut enjoyed a great measure of political independence, proclaiming in its Fundamental Orders of 1639 a democratic principle of government based on the will of the people.

Although Connecticut was the 5th colony to sign, the Constitution of the US in 1788, even after 100 years, it did not have any state flag to call its own. A special Connecticut Flag had to be planned. This was noticed by the Anna Warner Bailey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, who moved to Governor William Coffin, with their proposal. Thus, in a way, they were the designers of the Connecticut Flag. In 1895, the Governor brought in a proposal to the Connecticut General Assembly, for the Connecticut Flag for the first time. Finally, the official Connecticut Flag was adopted on 1897.

Three supported grape vines are depicted on the shield, each bearing three bunches of grapes. The rococo shield is outlined in gold and silver and is decorated with clusters of white oak leaves and acorns. A white streamer, cleft at each end and bordered in gold and brown, is displayed below the shield. The motto of the state of Connecticut is lettered in dark blue on the streamer. It reads Qui Transtulit Sustinet (He who transplanted still sustains).

Symbolic elements of the flag are represented by the three grape vines and their supports, white oak leaves and acorns, and the Connecticut state motto. Perhaps the most prominent feature of the Arms of the State are the three grape vines positioned in the center of the shield. Historically, these grape vines were passed down from a seal brought from England by Colonel George Fenwick in 1639. Colonel Fenwick's seal served as the seal of the Saybrook Colony and was passed on for the use of the Connecticut Colony around 1644.

The basic flag design in use today was first displayed at the time of the American Revolution (1775â€"83), although the background colour then was red. During the Civil War (1861â€"65) blue was the standard background shade for regimental colours, and many citizens thought of those military flags as representative of the state. Consequently, a flag with a blue background was later flown over the state capitol during sessions of the legislature. That design was the basis for a recommendation to the legislature that resulted in the adoption of the current flag in June 1897.

The Connecticut Flag is symbolic of the history of the state and bears the magnificent Arms of the State on either side. There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Connecticut flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. West Virginia was admitted to the Union as a Free State with the confirmation that in present state the servitude would be eliminated. President Lincoln endorsed the statehood bill for West Virginia on January 1, 1863. On April 20, 1863, West Virginia has declared a State, viable 60 days, after the fact on, June 20, 1863.

In the midst of the Civil War, turmoil was everywhere and it wasn't until September that West Virginia adopted its official State Seal, its coat of arms the most prominent component of the State flag. Another prominent component of the State flag is West Virginia's State flower big laurel (Rhododendron maximum), adopted in 1903.

The following year, 1904, St. Louis, Missouri staged an exposition, "The Louisiana Purchase Exposition," also know as the Saint Louis World's Fair. West Virginia needed to send a flag to the exposition to represent itself. A white flag with blue borders that featured the State flower on the obverse side (front) and the West Virginia coat of arms on the reverse side (back) was created.

The proportions of the state flag are the same as those of the United States flag. The background, or field, of the flag, is pure white bordered by a strip of blue on all four sides. In the center are the coat-of-arms of the State of West Virginia, including the date of admission to the union and the state motto, Montani Semper Liberi.

Additionally, a red ribbon, reading "State of West Virginia" was added below the coat of arms. Of course, it was found that producing a flag with a difference between the obverse side and the reverse side was not practical. It was expensive. To remedy the situation, big laurel, the coat of arms, and the red ribbon were combined to create a suitable display to appear on both sides of the flag. The West Virginia Legislature approved Senate Joint Resolution No. 18 on March 7, 1929. Resolution No. 18 described the West Virginia State flag the flies over the Capitol today.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior West Virginia flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Florida, which joined the union as the 27th state in 1845, is nicknamed the Sunshine State and known for its balmy climate and natural beauty. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, who led the first European expedition to Florida in 1513, named the state in tribute to Spain’s Easter celebration known as “Pascua Florida,” or Feast of Flowers.

During the first half of the 1800s, U.S. troops waged war with the region’s Native American population. During the Civil War, Florida was the third state to secede from the Union.

The next flag, dating to September 13, 1861, was based on the Stars and Bars of the Confederacy; it had red-white-red horizontal stripes and a vertical blue stripe bearing an elaborate seal.

Between 1868 and 1900, Florida's state flag consisted of a white field with the state seal in the center. During the late 1890s, Governor Francis P. Fleming suggested that a red cross be added, so that the banner did not appear to be a white flag of truce or surrender when hanging still on a flagpole.

Today the cross on the Florida state banner gets from the Confederate Battle Flag. The State Seal on the banner elements a Native American Seminole lady diffusing blossoms, a steamboat, a cabbage palmetto tree and a splendid sun. The Florida state flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers, and lakes la Florida.

The largest state (in the area) of the United States, Alaska was admitted to the union as the 49th state in 1959 and lies at the extreme northwest of the North American continent. Acquired by the United States in 1867, the territory was dubbed "Seward's Folly" after U.S. Secretary of State William Seward, who arranged to purchase the land from Russia.

The Alaska flag was officially adopted in 1959 by the Legislature of Alaska and it is in use ever since. The Flag of Alaska has an interesting history behind it that lends more color to the bright blue flag. The designer of the Alaska flag was a 13-year-old prodigy, Benny or John Ben Benson, who depicted 8 golden stars on a royal blue field.

The flag itself is one of simplicity but powerful meaning that it is hard to believe a child as young as John Bell could come up with it. But come up with it did and it has flown proudly over Alaska ever since.

Benny’s artful creativity was most definitely inspired by his own life’s experience and hardships, but his remarkable contribution to Alaska history also encouraged his fellow Alaska Natives, who had received citizenship and the right to vote only four years prior to Benson’s win.

Being part of the Ursa Major, the Big Dipper meant intense strength and the Pole or the North star symbolized Alaska, the prospective state of the Union. Benny's Alaska flag was an example of sheer simplicity, steeped in rich symbolism. Thus Benny was rewarded with a gold watch and some prize money for his brilliant idea and his flag was adopted as the Alaska state flag. The moving description of Benny's flag had also been incorporated into the flag song, the official song of the State.

On June 14, 1846, a small band of settlers marched on the Mexican garrison at Sonoma and took the commandant prisoner. They issued a proclamation which declared California to be a Republic independent of Mexico. This uprising became known as the Bear Flag Revolt (after the hastily-designed flag depicting a grizzly bear and a five pointed star over a red bar and the words "California Republic."

That frontier town was Sonoma, the land was California, and the rebels, American settlers spurred on by promises of help from U.S. Army Captain John Fremont. The rebel standard, the flag of the so-called California Republic, became the California State Flag. It's time California dump that flag, a symbol of blatant illegality and racial prejudice. Like the Confederate cross of St. Andrew, the Bear Flag is a symbol whose time has come and gone.

At the point when the Legislature voted to embrace the agitator standard as the state banner in 1911, California was in the hold of a bigot, jingoistic fever. The measure was supported by Sen. James Holohan from Watsonville, an individual from the Native Sons of the Golden West. The conspicuous purpose of the measure was to commend the Bear Flaggers, who were hailed as wholesome loyalists.

The California state flag was designed to establish California’s separation from Mexico before the “Bear Flag Revolt” in 1846.The single star on California’s flag is a reference to Texas’s Lone Star Flag design as Texas had previously gained independence from Mexico in 1836.

William Todd, who designed the flag, came from a family of Kentucky slave owners (his aunt was Mary Todd, Abraham Lincoln's wife). The group's first lieutenant, Henry L. Ford, was a U.S. Army deserter who had impersonated his brother to escape detection. Sam Kelsey, the second lieutenant, along with his brother Ben, was a genocidal maniac who killed hundreds of Pomo Indians in Clear Lake. The once common California grizzly bear (also official state animal) portrays strength, the star represents sovereignty, the red color signifies courage, and the white background stands for purity.

History is one of the most fascinating topics in the entire world. Many of us want to know how certain ideas were created or how people lived without many of the luxuries that we enjoy today? New York web design has its own history and it all starts with the work of one man: Tim Burners-Lee. You might not know this person by name but you should be aware of his achievements. To be more specific, he was responsible for the creation of the first website.

Tim Berners-Lee was born in London in 1955, and it seemed like his ties to computers began at an early age. Even before he became the inventor of the World Wide Web, his parents worked with computers. In any event, Berners-Lee graduated from the Queen's College and would kick off quite the career for himself. As you will learn, he has quite the ties to web design New York companies that are in existence today.

A couple of years before the first website went live in 1991, Berners-Lee proposed the idea of a network. What it would do is connect all computers to one another so that information could be exchanged. The website in question was made by Berners-Lee on a NeXT computer, which is extremely primitive compared to the technology that we enjoy now. What you may not know, though, is that the aforementioned computer came from the company headed by Steve Jobs, who many of us now associate with Apple.

As you might imagine, the first website wasn't exactly the most detailed or complex. According to companies like Avatar New York, Berners-Lee's website was focused primarily on information found on the World Wide Web. It didn't feature videos or pictures, but instead text and links to direct visitors to appropriate pages. Users could learn about the history of the World Wide Web, the people involved, information about browser, just to name a few categories. As Internet marketing companies can attest, websites have become more sophisticated since then.

As you can could determine from the information covered earlier, those who are involved in web design owe quite a bit to Tim Berners-Lee. Even though his name often goes overlooked, the impact he's had on the Internet as we know it is undeniable. As a matter of fact, it was due to his accomplishments that he was knighted in 2004. This is perhaps one of the biggest honors that Berners-Lee can boast today.

The first clear record of African-Americans in Arkansas is from 1721, more than a hundred years before statehood. In the decades that followed, Black men and women maintained an important presence in the state.

The flag of Arkansas consists of a red base with a white diamond in the center that is bordered in blue. There are 25, white, five-pointed stars in the blue border. In the center of the white diamond the word 'Arkansas' is written and there is one blue, five-pointed star above it and three more below it.

They represented the three countries that Arkansas had been a part of (Spain, France, and the United States), the date of the Louisiana purchase which made Arkansas part of the US (1803) and the fact that Arkansas was the 3rd state created from the Louisiana purchase land. The 25 stars on the flag designated Arkansas as the 25th state of the Union. Hocker modified the flag several times before it was ratified as the official flag.

The topmost single star above the name stands for the membership of Arkansas to the Confederate States of America. The 3 blue colored stars below the name are symbols for France, Spain, and the US, the countries to which Arkansas had belonged. There are also 2 stars parallel to the state name, that symbolize the twin states of Michigan and Arkansas.

Because adding the fourth star made the flag look asymmetrical (the bottom three stars were still arranged in a straight line) the legislator also offsets one of the stars at the bottom giving us the flag we fly today.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Arkansas flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. The birth of the Arizona State Flag can be traced back to the 1910 National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio before Arizona officially entered the union. Shooting matches began at Camp Perry in 1907 and rapidly developed into a prestigious annual event that continues to this day.

The acting team captain heard about this and decided to assign a proper flag for their team as mentioned above. However, much emphasis was given to the historical and symbolical values depicted on the flag. The present Arizona State Flag is heavily indebted to the aforesaid flag.

The idea for the design of the flag was conceived of by Colonel Harris and by Carl Hayden, Arizona's first representative in Congress who went on to become a United States Senator. Their first priorities for the design were that it contain historical values and that its colors should reflect those values.

Designed by Colonel Charles W. Harris, the first flag, carried by the Arizona Rifle Team to the National Rifle Matches in 1911, was sewn by Nan D. Hayden. In1912, now serving as Adjutant General of Arizona, Colonel Harris designed a state flag that was similar to the flag that he designed for the Arizona Rifle Team.

These red and yellow colors were also used Spanish expedition of Coronado in 1540, searching the 7 cities of Cibola. The rays are the Union's 13 original colonies and they also symbolize the rays of the sun. The 5 pointed copper star represents Arizona as the biggest producer of copper in the country. The lower half of the Arizona Flag is the exact Liberty blue used by the US Flag. The Arizona Flag beautifully combines the colors red, blue, yellow and copper to produce an amazing state flag.

Alabama, which joined the union as the 22nd state in 1819, is situated in the southern United States and nicknamed the "Heart of Dixie." Europeans came to this place in the sixteenth century. In the nineteenth century, cotton and slave work were vital to Alabama's economy.

In the nineteenth century, cotton and slave work were essential to Alabama's economy. The state expected a key part in the American Civil War; its capital, Montgomery, was the Confederacy's first capital. Alabama is the only state that contains all the major natural resources to make iron and steel within its borders.

Without a flag of their own, Alabamans rallied under the flags of the Confederate States of America. From March 4, 1861, until April 1865 one of two Confederate National Flags waved over Alabama soil.

On January 11, 1861, the Secession Convention passed a determination allocating a flag made by Montgomery women as the official pennant. This flag has consistently been insinuated as the Republic of Alabama Flag. One side of the flag demonstrated the Goddess of Liberty holding in her right hand an unsheathed sword; in the left a flag with one star.

Reminiscent of the Confederate battle flag, it was designated that the crimson bars were not to be less than six inches broad and were to extend diagonally across the flag. Because Act 383 did not specify a particular format, the flag is sometimes depicted as a square and at other times depicted as a rectangle.

Peru was once part of the great Incan Empire and later the major vice-royalty of Spanish South America. It was conquered in 1531-1533 by Francisco Pizarro. On July 28, 1821, Peru proclaimed its independence, but the Spanish were not finally defeated until 1824. For a hundred years thereafter, revolutions were frequent; a new war was fought with Spain in 1864-1866, and an unsuccessful war was fought with Chile from 1879 to 1883 (the War of the Pacific).

According to Peruvian writer Abraham Valdelomar, San Martín chose the red and white colors after having witnessed parihuanas -- flamingos with red wings and white chests -- along with the southern coast of Peru. A more prosaic but perhaps more realistic reason behind the color selection would be a mirroring of the former flag of the Viceroyalty of Peru (the Spanish Cross of Burgundy), which featured a red saltire, or diagonal cross, on a white background.

The Peruvian flag was adopted on February 25, 1825, making it one of the world's oldest flags. Peru gained independence from Spain on July 28, 1821, and a red and white flag diagonally divided into four sections was adopted. The Peruvian flag was modified to a red-white-red horizontal design in 1822 and it was adopted in 1825.

Another great liberator, Simón Bolívar, introduced a fourth and final design (as used today) on February 25, 1825. This flag used the same vertical triband design as introduced by José Bernardo de Tagle, but with the Peruvian coat of arms replacing the central sun.

The red stripes represent the blood shed for Peruvian freedom; while the white stands for peace. The flag of Peru was designed by José de San Martín, who hailed from Argentina. San Martin was a general and the prime leader of southern South America's successful fight for independence from Spain. Together with Simón Bolívar from the north, San Martín is regarded as one of the liberators of Spanish South America. He is a national hero of Argentina.

The Pennsylvania flag was adopted in the year 1907, by the State General Assembly, when an act describing the proper design of the flag was accepted and standardized.

According to the history of the Pennsylvania Flag, it is gathered that blue shade had to perfectly match with that of the US flag. The first flag for Pennsylvania was sanctioned in 1799 and displayed the Pennsylvania coat of arms, which was embroidered on each side. During the phase of the Civil War, the Pennsylvania regiments used the Stars and Stripes flag, but in a modified format.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania flag is composed of the state’s coat of arms embroidered in the center of a dark blue background. The Pennsylvania coat of arms depicts two horses with red harnesses, one on either side, standing on their hind legs facing a shield. The shield depicts the strengths of Pennsylvania â€" a ship carrying commerce, a farming plow, and three sheaves of wheat. Perched atop the shield is an eagle. Directly below the shield is an olive branch and a corn stalk crossing limbs. At the bottom of the coat of arms is a banner that reads “Virtue, liberty, Independence” â€" the state’s motto.

The Pennsylvania state flag’s dark blue background is required to be the same color as the blue in the United States flag. The identical color is meant to signify Pennsylvania’s bond with the U.S. Similarly, the bald eagle perched at the top of state’s coat of arms also represents Pennsylvania’s loyalty to the U.S.

The flag of Pennsylvania consists of a blue base with the state coat of arms in the center. The American eagle on top of the arms represents Pennsylvania's loyalty to the United States. The shield, supported by two horses, features: a ship which represents commerce; a plough, representing Pennsylvania's natural resources; and three wheat sheaves which stand for fertility. The olive branch and cornstalk, beneath the arms, stand for peace and prosperity. The state's motto: Virtue Liberty And Independence is written on a ribbon at the bottom of the flag.

There are two theories on the origins of the first Filipinos, the inhabitants of what will later be called the Philippine Islands and eventually the Republic of the Philippines.

In the beginning of the 3rd century, the inhabitants of Luzon island were in contact and trading with East Asian seafarers and merchants including the Chinese. In the 1400's the Japanese also established a trading post at Aparri in Northern Luzon.

According to official sources, the white triangle stands for equality and fraternity, the blue field for peace, truth, and justice, and the red field for patriotism and valor. The eight-rayed sun stands for the freedom and the eight provinces in which erupted in 1896, the Philippine revolution against the Spanish colonial power, (Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga and Tarlac), and for this time martial law was declared. The three stars symbolize the main geographical areas of Luzon, Mindanao, and the Visayas island group.

The first republic was finally suppressed by the United States, and its flag was outlawed between 1907 and 1920. In 1936 the new Commonwealth of the Philippines adopted that flag in anticipation of eventual independence. Under Japanese occupation, the Philippine flag was first forbidden and then officially recognized on October 14, 1943, when the Japanese-controlled second republic was proclaimed. Filipinos opposed to Japanese rule displayed the flag with the blue stripe down and the red stripe up (i.e., they hoisted the flag upside down).

The blue stripe symbolizes patriotism and justice. The red represents valor and the blood shed for freedom and independence and the white stands for peace and purity. The white triangle represents equality and the Katipunan nationalist organization. The three stars represent the three main geographical regions of the Philippines: Luzon, Mindanao, and the Visayas. The sun represents independence and its eight rays represent the eight provinces that led the Philippine uprising against Spanish rule.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Philippines flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Poland has had a long and rich history. Over the past thousand years, the country has defended its freedom and sovereignty from foreign aggressions on numerous occasions. Due to country’s geopolitical location between the East and the West, Polish history is marked with wars and uprisings. There was a time when Poland was the largest country in Europe but there was also a stage when it was totally erased from the world map for over a hundred years.

Thanks to the resilience and pride of the people who value freedom above all, Poland has not only managed to overcome troubles but also has been offering its own contribution to European history and culture.

The reason behind the colors present in the national flag of Poland is the fact that these colors are usually found in military flags and royal standards from earlier times. Because all soldiers of Poland tend to wear caps with white cockades, white has been used as one of the colors of the national flag. The white in the Polish flag is known to represent the bravery of the Polish soldiers.

Anticommunists insisted that the crown symbolized statehood and sovereignty, not monarchy, but the communists interpreted it as a representation of royal suzeraintyâ€"which was politically anathemaâ€"and consequently the crown was not restored until 1990, after the fall of the communist regime.

Because of the great respect of the Polish people to the bravery of their Polish soldiers, the national flag of Poland was designed based on the colors of their soldiers. The colors continued their reign as the national colors of Poland even after the cockades of the soldier were outlawed. The national flag with the national colors of Poland is even used excessively whenever Polish people fight for freedom and independence. It is the main reason why the Polish flag continues to gain respect from different countries all over the world.

For much of its early colonial history, when it is known as the Banda Oriental ('east bank' of the Uruguay river), the region of Uruguay functions mainly as an unsettled buffer zone between hostile neighbors - the Portuguese to the north in Brazil, the Spanish to the west and south in Argentina.

As part of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (formed in 1816), the Banda Orientalâ€"which would eventually become the country known as Uruguayâ€"was originally under the blue-white-blue horizontally striped flag raised by General Manuel Belgrano in 1812.

However, like many other Argentine provinces, Uruguay developed a flag of its own. The earliest example, dating from January 13, 1815, had a red horizontal stripe added in the center of each blue stripe. On August 25 of that year, the flag was changed to equal horizontal stripes of blue-white-red.

When it finally obtained recognition from both Argentina and Brazil as an independent country, the new republic of Uruguay adopted a definitive national flag on December 16, 1828. Designed by Joaquín Suárez, it effectively combined a symbol of Argentina with the flag pattern of the United States: on a white background were nine blue horizontal stripes for the nine original departments of the republic.

Its name refers to the May Revolution of 1810, in which Spanish American colonies began their revolt against Spain and eventually gained independence. The sun is meant to represent the legendary and symbolic moment when the sun broke through the clouds on May 25, 1810, accepted as a good omen for the budding nations. The Sun of May on the flag of Uruguay has alternating straight and wavy beams, each divided down the center with a black line. The nine stripes on the Uruguayan flag represent the nine departments of Uruguay at the time the First Constitution of Uruguay was signed in 1830.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Uruguay flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Some flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. Rhode Island, measuring only about 48 miles long and 37 miles wide, is the smallest of the U.S. states. Despite its small area, Rhode Island, known as the "Ocean State," boasts over 400 miles of coastline. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams in 1636, who had been banished from the Massachusetts colony for his advocacy of religious tolerance and the separation of church and state.

The Rhode Island legislature adopted an anchor for its colonial seal in 1647, and in 1664 it added the motto “Hope.” Those symbols were used on military flags by the time of the American Revolutionary War (1775â€"83), and Rhode Island ships may have used a simplified anchor flag by the early 19th century.

The flag was adopted on May 19, 1897. Rhode Island is the 13th state of the union, gaining statehood on May 29, 1790. It is one of the original 13 colonies that united to form the union of the United States.

The flag of Rhode Island consists of a white base with a yellow anchor circled by 13 yellow, five-pointed stars in the center. The anchor and stars are outlined in blue. Below the anchor of the word 'hope' is written in yellow on a blue ribbon.

The white and blue colors of the flag are possibly taken from the flags carried into battle by Rhode Island soldiers during the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican War.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Rhode Island flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. The national flag of Portugal was officially adopted on the 30th day of June 1911. It is known to be a rectangular bicolor, with red and green for its national color combination. The colors are divided unevenly, with red on the fly and green on the hoist. The boundary between the two colors is designed with the Portuguese coat of arms.

The flag of Portugal consists of two vertical stripes - the left stripe is green and the right one is a shade of red. The stripes are uneven as the green stripe takes up two-fifths of the flag's length and the red stripe takes up the remaining three-fifths. A coat of arms with the country's traditional shield is centered on the Portuguese flag where the two colors meet.

The Portuguese Republican Party's associations of green (hope) and red (the blood of sacrifice) are entirely their own and have no real association with Portugal's previous symbols.

The colors of the former flags of the Portuguese kings and queens were blue and white - a blue cross on a white background, thus the new flag represents a radical change from the old regime.

The coat of arms of Portugal, which is imprinted on the place where both colors meet, also symbolizes the bravery of the Portuguese. The coat of arms is composed of a white shield that contains five small blue shields. The blue shields also have dots in them. The white shield is also seen to be a red shield which is surrounded by strips of yellow. It also has seven small yellow castles in it. The five blue shields within the coat of arms of Portugal are known to signify the defeat of five Moorish kings. These kings were conquered by the very first King of Portugal.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Portugal flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Some flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. Puerto Rico is quite commonly known as the 51st state of America although it is actually a commonwealth of the USA and not a state at all. The phrase ‘51st state’ is one that is often heard and refers to areas or locales which have been or are being seriously considered candidates for United States statehood. This has led to some confusion over how many states there really are!

The flag was first used on December 22, 1895. A group of 59 Puerto Ricans led by Dr. Julio J. Henna, gather at "Chimney Corner Hall" in Manhattan, New York City and organizes a political group, attached to the Cuban Revolutionary Party, which advocated independence for Puerto Rico and Cuba from Spanish rule. As part of their activities, a flag was created to rally support for independence from Spain.

The Puerto Rican flag was first designed in 1892 by the members of the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Committee. After the United States annexed the territory of Puerto Rico, the national flag's use was banned from 1898 to 1952. The flag was adopted as the official flag of Puerto Rico in 1952.

The flag of Puerto Rico comprises of five equal horizontal bands of red and white stripes. A blue isosceles triangle then sits on the hoist side bearing a large white five -pointed star.

The three red bands denote the bloodshed that allowed for the division of power of the government between the branches. The white stripes originally stood for victory and peace after independence but were changed when the flag was officially adopted in 1952 to represent the new republican government. The blue used on the flag is not standardized and can vary from light blue to dark blue. The flag design is an inversion of the colors on the Cuban flag.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Puerto Rico flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Some flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. Acquired last December 27, 1989, the flag of Romania boasts of its three colors that are incorporated in the flag in equal sizes of vertical stripes. The three vertical stripes include blue (left), red (right), and yellow (middle). These three colors are of great importance in Romania.

The current Romanian flag was adopted on December 27, 1989. A horizontal red, yellow, blue flag was introduced by nationalists in 1848. In 1861, Romania was established when Walachia and Moldavia united. The new Romanian country adopted a red (top), yellow (middle) and blue (bottom) horizontally striped flag.

The revolutions that swept Europe in 1848 first produced the modern Romanian tricolor, blue-yellow-red, although it had horizontal stripes and the inscription “Justice” in Walachian and “Brotherhood” in Moldavian in the center. This flag was used only briefly, but it became the basis for the modern tricolor.

Romania adopted a horizontal tricolor of red-yellow-blue on June 22, 1861, above which blue streamers flew. In the navy version, the individual arms of the two territories (later their combined arms) were emblazoned. Although still subject to the Ottoman Empire, on April 23, 1867, Romania reestablished its vertical tricolor. Various changes were made in the coat of arms of the state flag in 1877 (at the time independence was declared), 1897, 1922, andâ€"under the communist regimeâ€"in 1948, 1952, and 1965.

In 1878, a year after Romania obtained freedom from the Ottoman Empire, the flag was used as Romania’s national flag. From that moment until the year 1989, the coat of arms of Romania was embossed at the center of the flag. However, in December 1989, the coat of arms was removed and the flag was left with the three historical colors. This flag is being used up until the present. The flag in Romania is almost similar to that of the Moldovan flag. The only distinguishing mark is that Moldova embossed its coat of arms into its flag.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Romania flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Some flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, just north of Australia, and many outlying islands. The first inhabitants of the island New Guinea were Papuan, Melanesian, and Negrito tribes, who altogether spoke more than 700 distinct languages.

The eastern half of New Guinea was first explored by Spanish and Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. In 1828, the Dutch formally took possession of the western half of the island.

Later the colonial administration developed a vertical tricolor of blue-yellow-green as a possible future national flag. The Southern Cross appeared in the form of five white stars on the hoist stripe, and a white silhouette bird-of-paradise was represented on the green stripe. The stars were reminiscent of those in the Australian national flag.

The flag of Papua New Guinea consists of two diagonal triangular sections - the left section is black and the right section is red. Five, five-pointed, white stars representing the Southern Cross are in the black portion of the flag; while a yellow bird of paradise is in the red section.

The flag background was changed radically: two colors, red and black, were chosen because they are featured extensively in local art and clothing. The diagonal division gave better balance to the design and made the flag unique. The national parliament recognized the flag on March 11, 1971, and its usage was extended to ships registered in Papua New Guinea when the country became independent on September 16, 1975.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Papua New Guinea flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flag. Paraguay was one of the first countries in South America to achieve independence. Its history since the arrival of the Spaniards in 1537 evokes images of tremendous sacrifice and suffering amid lush surroundings.

Paraguay's flag is the only national flag in the world to have different emblems on the obverse (front) and reverse (back). The front of the Paraguay flag has the country's state coat of arms on it, and the back has the country's Treasury Seal.

The national flag of Paraguay was formally adopted in 1842. The flag consists of three horizontal bands of red, white, and blue from top to bottom, an emblem in the center.

On a circular band is the country's official name written in Spanish, Republic of Paraguay. The Treasury Seal on the reverse side shows a lion guarding the red Phrygian cap. Surmounting the seal is the Paraguayan national motto: 'Paz y Justica', which means 'Peace and Justice’.

The coat of arms of Paraguay has a yellow star on a blue circle, framed by a palm branch and an olive branch, encircled by a red band with "Republica del Paraguay" across it. On the reverse, the seal of the treasury has a golden lion, a staff topped with the Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty. A red banner curves above, reading "Paz Y Justicia," which means "peace and justice." The flag of Paraguay is very similar to the flag of the Netherlands, which features the same three horizontal bands, without a seal or emblem.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Papua New Guinea flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. Diagrammatic representations or maps are great tools that give direction. These tools promote a sense of scale and discovery. Maps capture the visible wonders of the planet in an amazing way. A map helps you get a picture of a place you have never gone. Actually, with a map, you can tour the world without requiring the help of a person who understands the terrain. In case you are finding locating new maps very challenging, you can consider buying less costly old maps for sale Denver offers today. A map is important in the following ways.

Complex patterns are made simpler. Geographical data is beautiful and presents itself in a pattern better than others. When you look at spreadsheets, graphs, and charts, you will not get the real beauty. These tools are used just for numbers and words. This is not mean that numbers and words are not important but when diagrams are used one can get more information.

The other reason why this representation is needed is that it helps gain a better insight of the location component. Using this method, the viewpoint is heightened, and when it is integrated with business intelligence, the complex information can incorporate into an easy to understand view which helps drive better insight. This makes it easy for users to make better decisions. This information which is plotted in a map acts as a catalyst for great insight.

It is like making a discovery journey. When you look at the maps, you feel the urge to dig more and discover more. You can get information about a specific area or even group and study locations together. This is what will trigger one to want to discover more. There are those cases where for example, one is doing a project that involves engaging the users of that project. In this case, one will have to study the information deeper and allow themselves to learn more from the project.

A map adds important context. As you know, statistics are aimed at helping you see this versus that. However, it is not easy to establish if this difference is significant. At times, a business may get involved in things that are not significant statistically. Also, the data team may ignore key variables if they cannot comprehend the context of a problem at hand. However, geography is good at ensuring that this context is put in place.

They also help to tell better tells just like in the storybooks where the story teller knows very well to engage the audience they have to set the scene in such a way that the reader will relate to the key characters. In most cases, the best part of the story is where the thing happened and not when it happened. In the stories which involve locations, numbers are used to tell the location making the user identify which story is important.

It is good in changing mindsets. When you add the locations, one can bring their point home in a better way. People remember more what they see and as such, with a map, the data can give better information that may change the perspective of people.

So that you can be able to spot problems, you should combine your map with up to the minute data which can help you get a clear picture of your business and you can be able to slice, dice and group information and be able to sport problems, opportunities and gain new insights. You should know that there are considerations to make before you decide on choosing a diagrammatical representation for data display.

Oman is the oldest independent state in the Arab world. By the 18th century, the Omani Empire stretched from present-day Oman down the east coast of Africa. A new era began in 1970 when Sultan Qaboos bin Said changed the name of the country from the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman to simply Oman.

The sultans and imams of Oman clashed continuously throughout the 20th century until 1959, when the last Ibadi imam was evicted from the country. In a palace coup on July 23, 1970, the sultan, Sa'id bin Taimur, who had ruled since 1932, was overthrown by his son, Qabus ibn Sa'id, who promised to establish a modern government and use newfound oil wealth to aid the people of this very isolated state.

The Oman flag was adopted on November 18, 1995, after modifications were made to the Oman flag of 1970. A coup d'etat by the son of the ruling Sultan in 1970 resulted in a name change from the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. At this time, white and green horizontal stripes and the country's emblem were added to Oman's previous entirely red flag.

The ruling sultan was deposed on July 23, 1970, and the new sultan, Q?b?s ibn Sa??d, began to modernize the nation: he changed its name to Sultanate of Oman and, on December 17, 1970, introduced the new national flag.

The red base is taken from Oman's previous flag and represents the reigning Al Bu Said dynasty, which has been ruling Oman since the mid-18th century and also symbolizes the difficulties Oman overcame in its search for independence.

Fascinating facts and history of Oman flag emphasize how different people can perceive the same things because of their education or the country they grew up in. Green symbolizes the natural environment, "the Green Mountains" that are located in the Northern part of the country, red is a common symbol in most of the Gulf state flags and finally, the dagger shows the sovereignty of their leader.

Pakistan was one of the two original successor states to British India, which was partitioned along religious lines in 1947. For almost 25 years following independence, it consisted of two separate regions, East and West Pakistan, but now it is made up only of the western sector. Both India and Pakistan have laid claim to the Kashmir region; this territorial dispute led to war in 1949, 1965, 1971, 1999, and remains unresolved today. Military rule was instituted in Oct. 1999; a nominal democracy was declared in June 2001 by the ruling military leader, Pervez Musharraf.

The Pakistan flag was adopted on August 14, 1947, when the country was formed after the British-ruled Indian sub-continent was divided into two independent states, Pakistan, and India. The Pakistan flag is based on one created in 1906; which represented the All-Indian Muslim League - a political organization established to represent the political rights of Muslims in India. That flag had an entirely green base with a white crescent and star in the center.

The flag is raised in various nationally significant days of the year like the Independence Day and the Republic Day. It is also raised in the date of March 23 every year marking the implementation of the Lahore Resolution. The Independence Day of Pakistan is celebrated on August 14 every year and the flag is always displayed throughout the country on this date.

The flag of Pakistan closely resembles the flag of the political party, the All-Indian Muslim League, which consists of the same green field, the moon, and star as the flag of Pakistan, without the white stripe.

The flag bears the country’s religious faith to Islam, to the Islamic community and the rights of the religious minorities as well. The flag’s design being grounded on the flag of the Muslim League also bears some resemblance and insight from the banner of the Sultanate of Delhi and emblem used by the Mughal Empire.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Pakistan flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Pakistan flag for the future.

The current Panamanian flag was adopted on December 20, 1903, and provisionally approved in 1904 by the Constituent Assembly. It was not definitely approved until 1925. Panama was a colony of Spain from the 16th century until 1821, when independence was achieved. After independence from Spain, Panama joined Colombia as one of its provinces.

For the next 82 years, Panama attempted unsuccessfully to break away from Colombia. Between 1850 and 1900 Panama had 40 administrations, 50 riots, 5 attempted secessions, and 13 U.S. interventions. After a U.S. proposal for canal rights over the narrow isthmus was rejected by Colombia, Panama proclaimed its independence with U.S. backing in 1903.

The color white brings in peace and purity, and the two stars â€" the first one is the blue star that lies at the center of the top white left part, illustrates the new life as it was expected for the country, and the color involves the value of honesty and purity. The red star stands for the core of law and authority. At the same time, this star stays at the center of the white, where the color white places at the bottom right. The joined stars indicate a new form of republic.

It is indeed exciting to discover that there is a woman named Maria Ossa de Amador who finished the 3 flags before the independence day of Panama from Columbia. The tale behind this flag as it was made secretly on November 1, 1903, was safely kept from the Columbian government.

The flag of Panama is divided into four quadrants. The upper left (hoist side) quadrant is white with a blue five-pointed star, and the quadrant below it is solid blue. On the right, the upper quadrant is solid red, and the lower one has a red five-pointed star. The blue and red represent the two major political parties in Panama, the Conservative, and Liberal Parties, while the white symbolizes peace. The blue star symbolizes purity, and the red star symbolizes the new law of the country.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Panama flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. Norwegians, like the Danes and Swedes, are of Teutonic origin. The Norsemen, also known as Vikings, ravaged the coasts of northwest Europe from the 8th to the 11th century and were ruled by local chieftains. Olaf II Haraldsson became the first effective king of all Norway in 1015 and began converting the Norwegians to Christianity.

Within the 16th century up until 1841, the flag of Denmark has been used by Norway as its national flag. Such use represents the union of both countries. However, in 1814, Norway tried to obtain independence by adopting the Danish flag and incorporating the Norwegian lion at the upper square of the flag.

The Norwegian flag was first adopted on July 17, 1821, and is based on the Danish flag, with a blue cross placed within the white cross of the Danish flag. Norway was ruled by Denmark from the mid-15th century until 1814 when it joined a union with Sweden until 1905.

The official flag of Norway which was designed by Fredrik Meltzer is composed of three colors. These colors include bright red, dark blue and white. The colors were influenced by French Tricolore which is known as a sign of liberty. The flags of the United States and the United Kingdom are also among the major influences of the design of the Norwegian flag.

The colors of the Norwegian flag are believed to have been influenced by the flags of France, the United States and Britain and are considered the colors of liberty and independence. The cross is common to most Scandinavian flags and represents Norway's link to the other Scandinavian countries.

The Norwegian national flag is red, with a navy blue cross, off-center slightly toward the hoist side. The blue cross, which stretches from top to bottom and left to right across the flag, is outlined with a white border. These colors may represent freedom, drawing from the flags of France, the Netherlands, the USA, and the UK. The red and blue also reflect the shared history with Denmark and Sweden.

The national flag of Nigeria was actually designed in the year 1960 by Mr. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, who was then a student studying in London. His ensign of the national flag was adjudged as the best among the other entries for prestigious National Flag Design Competition held at the university campus. The then Nigeria High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, M.A. Martins like this ensign and passed a proposal to adopt this design as the national flag of Nigeria.

The national flag of Nigeria to stands for the rich history of the country accumulated over a certain period of time. One of the major features of the Nigerian national flag lies in the fact that it is vertically divided, into three equal parts with the central part of the flag being white and the other two in shades of green.

The Nigeria flag which was designed by Pa Akinkunmi in the year1958 at London originally had the following colors green white green with a red sun in the middle of the white section of which was later removed by the judges and was left with a green white green color pattern of which is used as the Nations national symbol.

It's also important to note that the national flag of Nigeria should be hung or have flown on days of state funerals or important memorial days. If in any case, the flag is in a room, then no other flag should be placed higher than that. If the flag is torn out it shouldn't be flown or used but rather burned or destroyed.

White-the white color in the Nigeria flag represents or simply means a five letter word which is Peace. As it is known without peace in a nation they can't be growth development that is why the white color in the Nigeria represent peace and unity which is a symbol of national growth.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Nigeria flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags made by American manufacturers. The Netherlands, on the coast of the North Sea. Julius Caesar found the low-lying Netherlands inhabited by Germanic tribes the Nervii, Frisii, and Batavi. The Batavi on the Roman frontier did not submit to Rome's rule until 13 B.C. , and then only as allies. The Franks controlled the region from the 4th to the 8th century, and it became part of Charlemagne's empire in the 8th and 9th centuries. The area later passed into the hands of Burgundy and the Austrian Hapsburgs and finally, in the 16th century, came under Spanish rule.

When Philip II of Spain suppressed political liberties and the growing Protestant movement in the Netherlands, a revolt led by William of Orange broke out in 1568. Under the Union of Utrecht (1579), the seven northern provinces became the United Provinces of the Netherlands. the war between the United Provinces and Spain continued into the 17th century but in 1648 Spain finally recognized Dutch independence.

It was an appropriate time to omit orange from the flag because in 1654 a defense treaty between the Dutch and the English permanently excluded members of the house of Orange from being heads of state in theNetherlands. In the 20th century many right-wing Dutch supported orange-white-blue as the "authentic flag" of the Netherlands, but the national flag was not changed.

After their revolution in 1789, the French recognized red, white, and blue as the "colors of liberty" and honored the Netherlands for first having used these in a flag. Pro-French "Patriots" in the Netherlands took the first step regarding an official Dutch national flag when their Batavian Republic legalized the red-white-blue tricolor on Feb. 14, 1796.

However, in the middle of the 17th century, the orange dye in the flag was replaced by red. It is because the people have noticed that the orange dye was actually unstable. After some time of using it, the orange dye turned to red.

The Netherlands flag influenced the design of the Russian flag when Peter the Great, Tsar of Russia, visited the Netherlands in the 17th century to observe the country's shipping industry. When he returned to Russia he assembled his own shipping fleet and designed a white, blue and red flag in honor of the Netherlands. That flag eventually became the state flag of Russia. The Russian flag would then inspire the flags of many other Slavic nations, and the colors became known as the pan-Slavic colors. Nicaragua, which means, "here united with the water," is a sovereign state whose people love freedom and independence. The western region of the country was colonized by Spain, where the east was once a British region with a culture similar to that of the Caribbean nations. Examples through history include the fight led by the "general of the people" Augusto C. Sandino against the intervention of the United States in 1927, and the Sandinista People's Revolution against the Somoza dictatorship, which led the way to democracy and solidarity in Nicaragua. Today the country is a democracy, with elections and a government dedicated to social justice and peace.

Arriving in 1524, the Spanish took control and stayed for around 300 years, enslaving the indigenous population, building the cities of Granada and León and fending off attacks from Dutch, French and British pirates. Conflict in Europe gradually weakened Spain's hold over the New World and Nicaragua finally became independent in 1821, becoming a fully independent republic in 1838.

The flag of Nicaragua consists of three horizontal stripes - the top and bottom stripe are blue and the middle stripe is white. Inside the center of the white stripe, and at the center of the flag, is the country's coat of arms.

The colors of the Nicaraguan flag originate from the flag of the former federation of the United Provinces of Central America. The two blue stripes represented the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea; while white symbolizes peace. A modern interpretation indicates that the color blue symbolizes justice and loyalty; while the color white represents virtue and purity. The coat of arms features an equilateral triangle which represents equality. Inside the triangle are five volcanoes, which represent the five members of the federation. The triangle also contains symbols of liberty and peace - represented by a red Phrygian cap, white rays, and rainbow.

The coat of arms on the flag includes a triangle for equality, a liberty cap for freedom, and five volcanoes between two oceans, symbolic of the five original Central American countries between the Atlantic and Pacific ocean basins.

In the late 15th century, the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to visit Namibia. Formerly called South-West Africa, the territory became a German colony in 1884. Between 1904 and 1908, German troops massacred tens of thousands of Herero, who had revolted against colonial rule. In 1915, during World War I, Namibian territory was taken over by South African forces. In 1921, it became a mandated territory of the League of Nations, under the administration of South Africa.

From the 1960s the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) was the leading group working toward independence in what was then South West Africa, a de facto colony of neighbouringSouth Africa.

When South Africa, under pressure from the international community, eventually agreed to relinquish control over the territory, a flag design competition was held for the future Republic of Namibia. The electoral victory of SWAPO in 1989 guaranteed that its own flag (a horizontal tricolor of blue, red, and green) would be influential when the choice was made.

In the upper hoist, there shall be a gold sun with twelve straight rays, the diameter of which shall be one-third of the width of the flag, with its vertical axis one-fifth of the distance from the hoist, positioned equidistant from the top edge and from the reversed bend. The rays, which shall each be two-fifths of the radius of the sun, issue from the outer edge of a blue ring, which shall be one-tenth the radius of the sun.

A golden 12-pointed sun was added in the upper hoist corner to represent life and energy. While no specific color attributions were originally made, red is now considered to reflect the heroism of the people and their determination to build a future of equal opportunity. Green is for agricultural resources, blue is for the sky and the Atlantic Ocean, and white is for peace and unity.

The Namibian flag was chosen by a committee which had been set up to provide technical advice on new national symbols. The public was requested to enter designs and 835 of them were sent in. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Namibia flag for the future.
