Heavy wind and rain throughout the Bay Area has flooded roadways, clogged public transit and left tens of thousands of businesses and residents without power this morning.
Wind gusts of up to 71 mph have been reported in some higher elevation areas and the California Highway Patrol has issued wind advisories for area bridges. The CHP has reported numerous flooded roadways throughout the area.
San Francisco International Airport has cancelled more than 230 flights because of weather.
Flooding closed the San Bruno BART station for nearly two hours this morning. It reopened at about 9:15 a.m., BART officials said. However, the Montgomery BART station in San Francisco remains closed because of a power outage.
Power was knocked out to 93,000 residents and businesses in San Francisco this morning. PG&E is still working on restoring power to those customers and thousands of others without power throughout the Bay Area.
Flooding has been reported on several San Francisco streets and intersections this morning. The Embarcadero was briefly closed from Pier 39 all the way to AT&T Park, police said.
There have also been reports of flooding on U.S. Highway 101, near Cesar Chavez Street, by the corner of Geary Boulevard and Fillmore Street, Third Avenue and Lake Street and at Sunset Boulevard and Wawona Street, where a traffic signal was out, police said.
Parking meters are not being enforced today as officers work on keeping traffic moving, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Paul Rose said.
Public schools in San Francisco, as well as most schools in the East Bay and North Bay, announced that they would be closed today.
This morning, Golden Gate University in San Francisco also announced it would be closed, as did Skyline College in San Bruno and Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park.
There are flash flood warnings throughout the North Bay, South Bay and through much of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm is expected to last throughout the day, moving toward the South Bay. Up to 4 inches of rain are forecasted and up to 8 inches is possible in some coastal areas.
