The history of the modern Federated States of Micronesia is one of settlement by Micronesians; colonization by Spain, Germany, and Japan. The Federated States of Micronesia is composed of the island states of Yap, Chuuk (Truk), Pohnpei (Ponape), and Kosrae, all in the Caroline Islands. The islands vary geologically from high mountainous islands to low coral atolls, with volcanic outcroppings on Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Chuuk. They are located 3,200 mi (5,150 km) west-southwest of Hawaii, in the north Pacific Ocean.

To the west of the Federated States of Micronesia lies the Republic of Palau, also in the Caroline archipelago, and to the east is the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Those two countries, together with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia, were administered by the United States as the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1947 to 1986.

The year 1947 saw the birth of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which was entirely administered by the United States. The first sign of movement towards Micronesian autonomy came with the establishment of the Micronesian Congress in 1964. Lack of development and control of the economic planning for the region led members to push for self-government.

The six white stars in the Trust Territory flag corresponded to the six districts of the countryĆ¢€"Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands (all of which later became separate states), as well as Yap, Truk (now Chuuk), and Ponape (now Pohnpei). The three latter island groups became the Federated States of Micronesia in 1979, together with the additional district of Kusaie (now Kosrae). The new Micronesian flag was designed and approved by an interim congress on November 30, 1978.

The design of the Micronesia flag has its roots linked to the flag of the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The colors of that flag were adopted from the flag of the United Nations.

Originally, the flag of Micronesia was carrying six stars, but after the departure of the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands from the Federation two stars were removed. Flags of similar character are typical of a number of states in Oceania. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Micronesia Flag for the future.
