Maldives is an archipelago country located in the Indian Ocean. It is officially called the Republic of Maldives. The island is made up of twenty-six land masses extending in the north to south direction. The island is in the Laccadive Sea of the Northern Indian Ocean. Its boundaries include Sri Lanka and India in the southwest direction. Maldives is composed of many islands and the central archipelago is the Lakshadweep-Maldives-Chagos group of islands.
Some archeologists, including the now much-dismissed Thor Heyerdahl, believe that the Maldives was well known from around 2000 BC, and was a trading junction for several ancient maritime civilizations including Egyptians, Romans, Mesopotamians and Indus Valley traders. The legendary sun-worshipping people called the Redin may have descended from one of these groups.
The flag of Maldives has a distinct history of its own. Originally the country had a plain red flag to which black and white bands were added later on. These stripes were placed in the hoist. Prime Minister Amir Abdul Majid Didi added the green panel and the crescent to the flag in the early part of the present century. Till 1949, the crescent in the flag would point towards the flag's hoist. The Maldives Flag has a green colored background, which is surrounded by a bright red panel. The flag has a crescent in the center of the green area.
