A Mexican flag is an object of great national pride within Mexico. The Mexican flag consists of three vertical stripes which are red, white and green. On the central white stripe lies the national crest; an eagle resting upon a cactus with a serpent in one of its talons. The original Mexican flag was officially presented in 1821 and while the flag has changed moderately over time, the current Mexican flag is almost exactly the same as the one created almost 200 years ago.

The first national flag of Mexico came into existence in 1821 when the country secured its independence from the rule of Spain. Just two years later when the federal republic was established, changes were made to the coat of arms and incorporated as part of the second national flag. The first flag featured a crown on the head of the eagle, which was now removed. Further, the eagle was now shown holding a serpent in its talons, and oak and laurels branches were added. These have been preserved in the modern-day flag.

In 1813, the revolutionaries designed a new flag. They used white silk with a border of blue and white squares. In the center, an eagle perched on a cactus. This image was encircled by a Latin motto, Oculis et unguibus asqué victrix (victorious with both eyes and talons), and was topped with the Spanish crown.

The Mexican flag colors also have historical origins. At the beginning of the 19th century when Mexico was fighting for independence from Spain a coalition army of Spanish troops and rebels was formed, the Ejercito Trigarante, or Army of the Three Guarantees. To represent this army a flag was used that incorporated red, white and green in a flag. This flag would be used until the end of the war. Preserving these colors in the flag of today is a way of remembering the struggle for independence as well as reminding the Mexican people of the foundations that this country was created upon.

There is no official directive for the meaning of the colors used in the Mexican flag. However, the first use of these colors was by the Army of the Three Guarantees in 1821. The Army was formed by the unification of Spanish troops and Mexican insurgent troops.

Later, under Venustiano Carranza, it was modified again: the eagle is now shown in left profile and reflects the Mexica legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan . A green, white and red ribbon representing the patriotic nation was added, shown tying together branches of oak and laurel. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Mexican Flag for the future.
