According to official historiography, the Republic of Moldova derives directly from the Moldovan principality that was founded by Drago? and gained independence from the Hungarian kingdom under the Valachian voievod Bogdan I in 1359. The government thus celebrated the 640th anniversary of statehood in 1999.

Formerly known as Bessarabia, this region was an integral part of the Romanian principality of Moldavia until 1812, when it was ceded to Russia by its suzerain, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Bessarabia remained a province of the Russian Empire until after World War I, when it became a part of Greater Romania, and it reverted to Russian control in 1940รข€"41 and again after World War II when it was joined to a strip of formerly Ukrainian territory, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

For many years, Romania and the USSR disputed each other's territorial claims over Bessarabia. Following the aborted coup against Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, Moldavia proclaimed its independence in Sept. 1991 and changed its name to the Romanian spelling, Moldova.

The National flag of Moldova was adopted on 27 of April 1990. Moldova flag is a tricolor having blue, yellow and red colors from the hoisting side towards the flying side of the flag, arranged vertically.

The flag of Moldova consists of three equal-sized vertical stripes - the left stripe is blue; the middle one yellow; and the right stripe is red. In the middle of the yellow stripe and the flag is the country's coat of arms, which consists of an eagle with the red and blue horizontally divided shield of Moldova on its chest. The shield contains various traditional emblems surrounding a stylized aurochs (European bison) head.

A traditional emblem of the Romanian territory of Walachia, the eagle holds a scepter and olive branch in its talons and a cross in its beak. The red, blue, and gold colors of the shield reflect the national tricolor. The flag remained official following the independence of Moldova in 1991. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Moldova flag for the future.
