Lithuania Ć¢€" a country located in the North Baltic Sea. It gained its unity in the 13th century and became one of the largest states of Europe. In 1569, they merged with Poland.

The Liths, or Lithuanians, united in the 12th century under the rule of Mindaugas, who became king in 1251. Through marriage, one of the later Lithuanian rulers became the king of Poland (Ladislaus II) in 1386, uniting the countries. In 1410, the Poles and Lithuanians defeated the powerful Teutonic Knights at Tannenberg.

There was a brief Nazi occupation from 1941 to 1945. The USSR regained control when WWII ended in 1945. The flag used before the collapse of the Soviet Union was a generic Soviet red flag with the name of the country on it and narrow green and white stripes at the bottom.

The Lithuanian flag was adopted on March 20, 1989, as Lithuania adopted its old tricolor flag as its official flag in March 1989. The Lithuanian flag had previously been used during Lithuania's period of independence from Russia - from 1918 to 1940. It was created in 1918 replacing the historical red flag featuring the Vytis or white knight on a horse, which had been used by Lithuania for centuries. The Soviet Union took control of the country again in 1944 and outlawed the flag. On September 20, 1989, Lithuania proclaimed independence from the Soviet Union.

After the revolution LithuaniaĆ¢€™s longing to have an independent state grew. Of course, Russia was aware of this. That is why they thought of a solution to resolve this problem. It was here that the question of having a Lithuanian national flag arose.

It is a criminal offense not to fly the flag on Independence Day and you can be fined. In 1992, the government defined the exact colors and design after they were adopted in 1992. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Lithuanian Flag for the future.
